Coimbra
Good to Know
Coimbra, a riverside city in the centre of Portugal, and the former capital of the country, holds an ancient and well-preserved medieval town, as well as the University of Coimbra, the oldest academic institution in the Portuguese-speaking world and one of the oldest around the globe. Built on the site of an ancient palace, the University is famous for its baroque library, the Joanina Library, and its 18th century bell tower. In the old town, there is the Romanesque cathedral of the XII century, the Old Cathedral.
The “City of Students” is one of the most important urban and business centres of Portugal, due to its privilege location between Lisbon and Oporto metropolitan areas. The wealth of the city rests mostly on its 37.000 Higher Education students per year, but also in shopping, heath science industry, specialized medical care and notable high-technology companies.
